From tomorrow (April 21st 2015) Google will unleash their most devastating algorithm change yet. Nicknamed ‘Mobilegeddon’ you can’t imagine anyone taking it seriously, but unlike Panda, Hummingbird or the Pigeon this alteration to the ranking system in searches will have a heavy impact on sites deemed unfriendly to mobiles.
Google has been preparing us all for a while – giving us the odd hint over the last few years!!
What’s Google’s Problem?
They know that for a smart phone user there’s nothing more annoying than a website that is solely made for desktops and so display issues create browsing nightmares, such as:
- Having to zoom in/out constantly to read an article.
- Not being able to activate links without pressing the wrong one thanks to bad layout.
- Inaccessible areas on the page.
Google wants to make the mobile experience a better one and with good cause as research shows that 60% of online traffic is made with mobile phone browsing! Those sites that don’t comply will find their search engine ranking hit hard.
Don’t become one of these businesses!
A study made by http://www.portent.com/ of the top 25,000 American websites concluded that 40% of them were not mobile-friendly (responsive). That’s a lot of SEO hangovers in the morning for the likes of The Department of Homeland Security and 40 other US Government sites! Here in the UK it looks like it’s the same story for the Daily Mail’s website, David Beckham and Ryanair.
Small Businesses, It’s Time for Action!
A drop in rankings has the domino-effect of less traffic to you business’s site leading to less sales. Analysts are already predicting an 11% drop in site visits due to negative ranking of websites not incorporating mobile-friendliness. Mobilegeddon has a silly name but serious consequences for those that ignore it. Searches to your website will be hit hard with negative ranking if your online presence isn’t given the foundations of a ‘responsive’ layout. Responsive websites will ‘respond’ to the device displaying a web page by adapting text, images, links, and all other components to a usable format. No more text to zoom in to; images fit the screen neatly; and links are easily accessible. The whole user experience is irritation-free.
Look out for web developers offering a responsive site but without any Search Engine Optimisation included in the package. There’s really no point spending good money on a site that looks great on mobiles, tablets and desktops when you’re not being helped with your ranking – which is the whole point of the exercise! A company like ourselves will make sure your new ‘mobilegeddon-proof’ site will be able to rank – a responsive site is there to be invested in and it’s flexibility will handle anything else that Google wants to throw at the online business world.
