The latest algorithm from Google nick-named Google Pigeon by Search Engine Land has landed in the UK. The alteration to search results was first noticed in American searches back in July 2014. At first there seemed to be a bias towards online directories such as Yelp! having their entries ranked high; Yelp! and Google had a bit of a falling out and this seemed to indicate they’d kissed and made up. As the dust started to settle it became apparent that the search engine giants are actually on the side of the underdog.
Local Searches – Local Results
With location and distance being rooted in the new algorithm local businesses are appearing for people wanting local results. Pigeon has gone back to basics offering relevant, accurate and above all useful results.
The introduction of an image ‘carousel’ also helps local businesses get found as long as they’ve got their Alt Tags in place.
So results are becoming more refined and organic searches will bring SMEs ranking alongside directories which they can be part of anyway. The big boys with the bottomless wallets will always win the pay-per-click race unfortunately but Google has finally recognised this and is giving the wimpy kid a fighting chance!
The Google Pigeon has landed and has every right to look plucky!
